8Lake Retba, Senegal
Lake Retba, also known as Lac Rose, is located northeast of Dakar, Senegal, and is famous for its vivid pink waters. The lake’s pink color is most intense during the dry season (November to June) and is caused by Dunaliella salina algae, which produces a red pigment to absorb sunlight. The lake has an exceptionally high salt content, similar to that of the Dead Sea, making it easy for swimmers to float on its surface. Lake Retba is also an important site for salt harvesting, with locals collecting salt from the lake’s shores to sell in local markets.
