The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose is a sprawling Victorian mansion unlike any other. Built continuously for 38 years by Sarah Winchester, heir to the rifle fortune, the home contains staircases that go nowhere, doors that open into walls, and oddly shaped rooms.

Legend has it she was haunted by the spirits of those killed by Winchester rifles and believed endless construction would keep them at bay. The house’s bizarre architecture and unexplained elements make it a magnet for paranormal investigators.
