5The Glacier Express (Switzerland)
The Glacier Express is often described as the slowest express train in the world, but what it lacks in speed, it more than makes up for in beauty. This seven-and-a-half-hour journey connects the Swiss mountain resorts of Zermatt and St. Moritz, winding through some of the most stunning Alpine scenery imaginable. The train crosses 291 bridges, passes through 91 tunnels, and climbs over 2,000 meters (6,500 feet) in altitude at the Oberalp Pass.
What makes the Glacier Express special is the incredible precision with which it navigates the high-altitude terrain, all while providing panoramic views of glaciers, lush valleys, and picture-perfect villages nestled in the Swiss Alps. Passengers can enjoy the scenic ride from the comfort of first- or second-class carriages, with large windows perfect for photographing the incredible landscape. This is a train journey where the destination truly doesn’t matter, as the journey itself is the highlight.
