9The Winged Victory of Samothrace
The Winged Victory of Samothrace, also known as Nike of Samothrace, is an ancient Greek sculpture that captures a sense of motion and triumph. Carved around the 2nd century BC, this statue of the Greek goddess Nike was discovered on the island of Samothrace in 1863. Standing at the top of the grand Daru staircase, her headless and armless figure with billowing drapery still conveys a dynamic sense of movement as if she’s just landed on the prow of a ship. The piece remains a remarkable testament to Hellenistic sculpture.
