Serving scientists and researchers in Antarctica, McMurdo Station’s Ice Runway is perhaps one of the most unusual and dangerous airports in the world. The runway is built entirely on ice, and although it is regularly maintained, the surface can be unpredictable. Extreme weather conditions, such as high winds, whiteouts, and temperatures that can plunge well below freezing, make landing here extremely hazardous. The lack of visual references due to the icy, featureless landscape adds another layer of difficulty for pilots.
