5Madeira International Airport, Portugal

Madeira International Airport is located on the mountainous island of Madeira, and its runway extends out over the Atlantic Ocean, supported by pillars. Originally, the runway was just 1,600 meters (5,249 feet) long, but it was extended to 2,781 meters (9,124 feet) after several accidents. Despite the extension, landing here remains hazardous due to strong winds, turbulence, and the need for pilots to navigate between mountains and over the ocean. The proximity to the sea means pilots have very little room for error during both takeoff and landing.
