1Kai Tak Airport (Closed), Hong Kong
Although Kai Tak Airport closed in 1998, it remains legendary for its terrifying approach. Located in the heart of Hong Kong, the airport was surrounded by skyscrapers, and the approach required pilots to make a sharp 47-degree turn just before landing, flying low over buildings and tightly packed neighborhoods. This “checkerboard approach” was one of the most technically challenging in aviation history, as pilots had to descend rapidly while navigating between mountains and densely populated urban areas. Though Kai Tak is no longer in use, its legacy as one of the most dangerous airports remains.
