Most visitors to Syros focus on Ermoupoli, the cosmopolitan port town, but Ano Syros—the medieval hilltop settlement—offers an enchanting escape. Its narrow lanes, Catholic churches, and bougainvillea-covered houses evoke an old-world charm. Visit outside the festival season, and you can wander undisturbed, finding tiny tavernas playing rebetiko music, with breathtaking views of the Cycladic sea at sunset.
