2El Caminito del Rey, Spain: A Walk Along the Precipice
Once known as the “world’s most dangerous walkway,” El Caminito del Rey in southern Spain is a narrow path clinging to the side of a steep gorge. Originally built in the early 20th century for workers to access a hydroelectric plant, the walkway deteriorated over time, leaving sections of it crumbling and barely passable. With no guardrails and parts of the path missing entirely, El Caminito del Rey earned its dangerous reputation, and several fatalities occurred over the years.
In 2015, the walkway was restored and reopened to the public, with safety measures such as handrails and reinforced sections. However, the sheer cliffs and dizzying heights still make it a heart-pounding experience. The thrill of walking along a narrow path hundreds of feet above the ground remains, but with less risk than before.
