4Mount Huashan, China: The World’s Most Dangerous Hike
Mount Huashan, one of China’s Five Great Mountains, is famous for its breathtaking scenery—and its terrifying hiking trails. The mountain is home to a series of narrow paths and steep staircases, many of which are cut directly into the rock face. However, it’s the “plank walk” that earns Mount Huashan its reputation as one of the most dangerous hikes in the world.
The plank walk is a narrow wooden boardwalk bolted to the side of a cliff, with only a harness and a few rusty chains separating hikers from a deadly fall into the abyss. At some points, hikers must cling to the cliff itself, with nothing but a drop of several thousand feet below. Despite the risks, Mount Huashan attracts thrill-seekers from around the world who are eager to experience the adrenaline rush of walking on the edge—literally.
