3Day 3: Sorrento and Pompeii – History and Heritage

On Day 3, leave the Amalfi Coast behind and head towards Sorrento, a charming town that serves as the gateway to the Bay of Naples and Pompeii. Sorrento, with its sweeping views of the bay and Mount Vesuvius in the distance, offers a more laid-back vibe compared to the Amalfi Coast. Start your day with a leisurely breakfast and explore Piazza Tasso, Sorrento’s bustling main square. Walk through the Marina Grande for a view of colorful fishing boats and take in the citrus-scented streets.

After spending the morning in Sorrento, head to the ancient ruins of Pompeii, just a 30-minute drive away. Pompeii, a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a snapshot of life frozen in time after the catastrophic eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD. Wander through the ancient streets, explore the amphitheater, temples, and preserved villas, and marvel at the detailed frescoes and mosaics that survived the eruption.

After a day of exploring, return to Sorrento for a relaxing evening. Be sure to try gnocchi alla Sorrentina, a local dish made with fresh tomatoes, mozzarella, and basil, before resting up for the next leg of your journey.
