5Day 1: Naples – The Gateway to the South

Your road trip begins in Naples, a city that is the heartbeat of Southern Italy. Often described as chaotic yet captivating, Naples offers an exciting mix of history, culture, and some of the best food in the country. Start your day with a classic Neapolitan espresso at a local café, followed by a visit to the Naples National Archaeological Museum, which houses artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum, and provides an introduction to the region’s deep-rooted history.

Naples is also the birthplace of pizza, so don’t miss the opportunity to indulge in an authentic Margherita pizza at a famous pizzeria like Da Michele or Sorbillo. After lunch, explore the narrow streets of the Spaccanapoli district, where history meets modern life, and the Napoli Sotterranea, the underground tunnels of ancient Naples.

For dinner, head to the waterfront for fresh seafood, then drive to nearby Mount Vesuvius for a sunset view. The drive to your next destination, the Amalfi Coast, is about an hour and a half, so either stay in Naples for the night or begin your coastal journey.
