5Nördlingen: A Town in a Meteor Crater

Nördlingen is one of the most unique towns along the Romantic Road, as it’s built within the crater of a meteor impact that occurred over 15 million years ago. The circular shape of the town is still evident in its layout, and its medieval walls are completely intact, offering a rare chance to walk the entire circumference of the town.
Climbing the 90-meter tower of St. George’s Church, affectionately known as “Daniel,” is a must. From the top, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Nördlingen and the surrounding Ries Crater landscape. The town’s distinctive circular shape and well-preserved architecture make it one of the most scenic and fascinating stops on the Romantic Road.
