3Hassan II Mosque – Casablanca, Morocco
The Hassan II Mosque in Casablanca is an architectural gem that sits on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. Completed in 1993, this mosque is the largest in Morocco and the seventh largest in the world. The mosque’s minaret, which stands 210 meters high, is the tallest in the world.
Designed by French architect Michel Pinseau, the mosque blends traditional Islamic architecture with modern engineering. The most remarkable feature is its location—part of the mosque extends over the ocean, giving the impression that it is floating on water. The intricate mosaics, zellij (Moroccan tilework), carved plaster, and wooden ceilings inside the mosque are masterpieces of Moroccan craftsmanship. The mosque also features a retractable roof, allowing worshippers to pray under the open sky on special occasions.
