3Belize Barrier Reef – Belize
The Belize Barrier Reef is the second-largest coral reef system in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage site. Stretching for about 300 kilometers (186 miles) along the coast of Belize, this reef is a diver’s paradise and one of the most accessible coral reefs for travelers from North America. The reef system includes several notable attractions, including the famous Great Blue Hole, a massive underwater sinkhole that draws divers from around the globe.
Belize’s reef is home to more than 100 species of coral and over 500 species of fish, as well as marine animals such as manatees, sea turtles, and dolphins. The vibrant corals range in color from delicate pinks to deep purples and oranges, providing a striking contrast against the turquoise waters. The health of the Belize Barrier Reef is closely monitored, and it is one of the few reef systems that have shown signs of recovery from coral bleaching, thanks to conservation efforts.
