6Thiksey Monastery, India
Thiksey Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery located in the remote Ladakh region of northern India. Situated at an altitude of 11,800 feet, this 12-story complex is often called the “Mini Potala” because of its resemblance to Tibet’s Potala Palace. The monastery overlooks the vast Indus Valley, with its snow-covered peaks in the distance, creating a breathtaking backdrop. Thiksey houses numerous temples, statues, and stupas, including a 49-foot statue of Maitreya Buddha, and is a place where visitors can witness traditional Buddhist rituals and practices in a serene, remote setting.
