2Gates of Paradise by Lorenzo Ghiberti (1425-1452)
The Gates of Paradise are the famous bronze doors created by Lorenzo Ghiberti for the Baptistery of San Giovanni in Florence. These doors consist of ten large panels that depict scenes from the Old Testament, such as the Creation of Adam and Eve and the Story of Jacob and Esau. Ghiberti’s use of perspective and his ability to convey depth in relief were groundbreaking. Each panel is a detailed narrative filled with expressive figures and complex compositions. The Gates of Paradise are considered one of the masterpieces of Renaissance sculpture, and their name was coined by Michelangelo, who was so impressed by their beauty that he said they were worthy of the gates of heaven.
