2Hallstatt, Austria

Although not technically in the Alps, Hallstatt is close enough to deserve a mention. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is one of Austria’s most photographed towns. Situated on the shores of Lake Hallstatt, the town is known for its idyllic setting, with traditional wooden houses perched on the lakefront and surrounded by towering mountains.
Visitors can explore the town’s historic salt mines, hike to the Dachstein Ice Caves, or simply enjoy the serenity of the lake and the stunning views. Hallstatt is beautiful year-round, but especially enchanting in winter when it’s dusted with snow.
