No list of architectural wonders would be complete without mentioning La Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Spain. Designed by the renowned architect Antoni Gaudí, this basilica is a masterpiece of modernist and Gothic-inspired architecture. Construction began in 1882, and the building is still unfinished today, making it one of the longest ongoing architectural projects in the world.
The Sagrada Família is known for its otherworldly design, featuring spires that rise dramatically toward the sky, intricate facades depicting scenes from the Bible, and Gaudí’s characteristic use of natural forms and organic shapes. Inside, towering columns resemble tree trunks, supporting a ceiling that evokes a forest canopy, creating an atmosphere of both grandeur and intimacy. Once completed, the Sagrada Família is expected to have 18 spires, representing the 12 apostles, the Virgin Mary, the four Evangelists, and Jesus Christ.
