7Glaciers Are Constantly Moving

Though they may appear static, glaciers are constantly on the move, slowly flowing like rivers of ice. The movement of glaciers is driven by gravity and the internal pressure of their immense weight. This movement is what shapes the landscapes around them, carving out valleys, fjords, and mountain ranges.

Glaciers move at different speeds, depending on their size, slope, and the amount of meltwater present at their base. Some glaciers advance a few inches per day, while others may move several feet in the same time frame. Occasionally, glaciers can experience rapid movement, known as a “glacier surge,” where they move much faster than usual for a short period, sometimes advancing several meters in a single day.
