Contrary to popular belief, not all gladiators were slaves or prisoners. Many individuals willingly chose to become gladiators, driven by the prospect of fame, wealth, and social status. Some free men, often facing financial hardships or seeking fame, volunteered to join gladiator schools (ludus) in hopes of securing a better future.
