6Lightning is Not Always a Single Flash
While we often think of lightning as a single, dramatic flash, a lightning strike can consist of multiple flashes. In fact, a typical lightning strike involves a series of rapid, successive discharges. The initial stroke is followed by several return strokes, which can make the lightning appear as a flickering or branching pattern in the sky. This series of discharges can occur within a fraction of a second, creating the characteristic branching effect seen during a lightning storm.
