8Dragon Blood Tree, Socotra Island, Yemen
The Dragon Blood Tree (Dracaena cinnabari) is native to the remote Socotra Island in Yemen and looks like something from another planet. Its umbrella-like canopy of tightly packed branches gives it a distinct and almost alien appearance. The tree gets its name from the dark red resin it produces, which was historically referred to as “dragon’s blood.” This resin has been used for centuries in medicine, dye, and even as a varnish. The Dragon Blood Tree’s otherworldly shape and its isolated habitat make it one of the most unusual and fascinating trees on Earth.
