Before Paris, the Eiffel Tower’s original plans were actually proposed to the city of Barcelona for their 1888 Universal Exposition. However, Barcelona officials rejected it, believing the design was too strange and not in line with their vision for the city.

They felt it would clash with Barcelona’s classic architectural style. Paris seized the opportunity, and the Eiffel Tower quickly became an integral part of the French city’s identity.
