Built for the 1889 Exposition Universelle (World’s Fair) in Paris, the Eiffel Tower was originally intended to be a temporary structure. Its designer, Gustave Eiffel, envisioned it as a temporary showcase of French engineering meant to stand for only 20 years. However, due to its utility as a radiotelegraph station in the early 20th century, the Eiffel Tower remained standing, and its unique silhouette has since become one of the most recognizable landmarks in the world.
