5Red Sauce Doesn’t Mean Ketchup

It may be tomato-based, but ketchup is absolutely not a stand-in for proper pasta sauce. In Italy, tomato sauce (or sugo) is slow-simmered, made with peeled tomatoes, garlic or onions, olive oil, and fresh herbs like basil. It’s simple, clean, and full of flavor.

Adding ketchup to pasta isn’t just frowned upon — it’s considered an insult to the entire Italian culinary tradition. When in doubt, stick to olive oil, garlic, or even a knob of butter. Simplicity wins.
