2Nimrud, Iraq

Nimrud, an ancient Assyrian city located in modern-day Iraq, was home to some of the most impressive archaeological sites in the Middle East. The city, founded in the 13th century BCE, featured grand palaces, temples, and intricate reliefs that provided valuable insights into Assyrian civilization.

In 2015, ISIS militants destroyed significant portions of Nimrud, including the Northwest Palace and numerous priceless artifacts. This act of cultural vandalism erased a significant part of human history and heritage.
