5Toyama Bay, Japan

On the other side of the world, in Toyama Bay, Japan, a breathtaking display of bioluminescence takes place. Every winter, between March and April, millions of firefly squid gather in the bay to spawn. These small, 3-inch long creatures are equipped with photophores on their bodies that create a stunning blue light.

The entire bay comes alive as the squid engage in a celestial dance of light, and local fishermen have perfected a unique method of capturing them, using special LED lights to try to make them come to the surface.
