5Rocamadour – The Cliffside Marvel

Carved into the limestone cliffs of the Lot Valley, Rocamadour is one of France’s most visually striking medieval villages. This UNESCO-listed destination appears to defy gravity as it clings to a sheer rock face, overlooking the Alzou River. During the Middle Ages, it was an important stop along the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route.

Wander through the steep, winding streets, where centuries-old chapels and stone houses create a fairytale atmosphere. The Sanctuary of Rocamadour, a collection of religious buildings, is the village’s highlight, particularly the Chapel of Notre Dame, home to the revered Black Madonna statue. Visitors can also explore the Château de Rocamadour, which offers stunning views over the valley.
