1Pingyao, China

Pingyao is one of the best-preserved ancient walled towns in China, offering a rare glimpse into China’s imperial past. Located in Shanxi province, Pingyao was once a thriving financial center during the Ming and Qing dynasties. Its architecture, including watchtowers, temples, and traditional courtyards, has remained largely unchanged for centuries.

UNESCO recognized Pingyao for its exceptional preservation of Han Chinese urban planning and architecture. Visitors can walk along the ancient city walls, explore the Rishengchang Exchange House (one of the first banks in China), and admire the town’s beautifully preserved buildings.
