3Lake Natron, Tanzania

Lake Natron, located in northern Tanzania near the border with Kenya, is known for its otherworldly appearance. While not always pink, the lake’s waters can take on a reddish or pinkish hue during the dry season due to the presence of microorganisms and high salinity. Lake Natron is one of the most alkaline lakes in the world, with water temperatures reaching up to 60°C (140°F) and a pH level as high as 10.5. The extreme conditions of the lake make it inhospitable to most life forms, but it is a breeding ground for flamingos, whose pink feathers mirror the lake’s colors.
