2Derinkuyu Underground City, Turkey

Beneath the Anatolian plains in Turkey lies the sprawling underground city of Derinkuyu. Discovered by accident in the 1960s, this subterranean marvel extends over 200 feet deep and once housed up to 20,000 people.

Complete with ventilation shafts, wells, and even schools, its purpose remains debated. Was it a refuge from invasions, a religious sanctuary, or something more? The scale and sophistication of the tunnels continue to baffle archaeologists.
