Often referred to as “Plastic Beach,” Kamilo Beach on Hawaii’s Big Island is inundated with marine debris carried by ocean currents from the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. The beach is a grim reminder of the impact of oceanic plastic pollution, with microplastics deeply embedded in the sand and larger debris covering the shoreline.
