To shield spectators from the scorching Roman sun, the Colosseum boasted a retractable awning known as the velarium. Made of linen or canvas, this massive covering was maneuvered by a system of ropes and pulleys, providing shade for the 50,000-80,000 spectators within the amphitheater.
